Land of Kings: The Dalston Howl Live Sessions

In May 2012, London Fields Radio returned to multi-arts, multi-venue festival Land of Kings in Dalston to host an evening of pop-up radio with guests and hosts from across the festival line-up. We took over the Print House Gallery until midnight with a special selection of shows.

In this podcast, The Dalston Howl’s Amanda Barokh and Sisters of Mirthy’s Becky Griesdale present a London Fields Radio live session at Land of Kings. In this episode, they’re joined by bohemian alt.blues troupe All The Queen’s Ravens and exciting new band Land Shapes for some laidback acoustic tunes and chat.

Sisters of Mirthy, Vol. 7

What do riot grrls do on their day off? Hang around pool halls and muse on the big questions, that’s what. Like ‘where are all the professional female snooker players?’. Also, In honour of any Hackney grrl who’s ever grown sick of neatly cleaning and stacking their empty beer cans, the Sisters get busted by the recycling man. Plus, a rare play of the London Women’s Musicians Collective girls Lottie and Ada’s anti bondage cover of these boots are made for walking.

Sisters of Mirthy, Vol. 6

Inspired by the inimitable Pauline Black, of The Selecter, the sisters go 2 Tone mental for a ska grrl special. Hear Pauline herself talk about how the politics and polo shirts of the 60s and 70s made her the coolest ska girl in town, and skank til you drop to the rock steady sounds of The Mo- Dettes and the Bodysnatchers.

Sisters of Mirthy, Vol. 5

The Sisters celebrate the end of summer with a hazy, festival-inspired playlist of ’90s riot grrl classics to usher in the harvest moon. Hear about the adventures of London Fields Radio’s first (and not entirely successful) all-girl football team. And… the first ever live set from brand new and underground band Zoetrope, with Sisters of Mirthy’s Zoe on the drums!

Sisters of Mirthy, Vol. 4

London Field’s Radio’s alternative to Women’s Hour sees presenter-sisters Zoe and Becky bake up a sonic storm of music and debate, offering an alternative dose of feminism for Hackney-based grrrls.

In this month’s episode of fast-talking feminism and riot grrrl righteousness, the Sisters of Mirthy hitch a ride on the hip hop wagon with interviews and live tracks from grrl MC, Envy, and female beatboxing champ Bellatrix, with some suitably shouty tracks with Yo Majesty! and Lady Sovereign. Hear MIA’s tribute demo for Amy Winehouse, and take a tour of the new Vorticists exhibition at Tate Britain. Plus, ‘What’s all the fuss about fake lesbian bloggers?’ and the regular nonsense and noises from the grrls.
